Terms of Use
In plain words
Be 18 or older. Be honest. Be kind and safe. Show up when you say you will, or tell people early. Meet in public places. We introduce you, but we cannot vouch for anyone, so use your own good judgment.
1. Who can use Butterflies
You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding agreement. You may have one account. Dating introductions are available only to people who pass our ID check. Giving a false age or failing the age check can lead to a permanent ban. By using Butterflies you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy above.
2. Your account and information
Give accurate information, including your age, and keep it up to date. Use your own photos of yourself. You need five photos to be introduced to people. Do not pretend to be someone else, and do not share your account. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
3. How Butterflies works
We introduce you to a limited number of people based on compatibility. Chat opens when you both say "I'm in". Plans, reminders and the private check-in are tools to help you meet. We may change how matching works at any time, and we do not guarantee any number of matches or any result from them.
4. Community rules
You agree not to:
- harass, threaten, pressure, or discriminate against anyone;
- send sexual content that was not asked for, or any content involving minors;
- ask for money, promote a business, or run a scam;
- share another person's private information or messages without permission;
- use fake, stolen or misleading photos or details;
- collect data from Butterflies, or use bots or automated tools;
- pretend to be another person;
- create more than one account, or a new account to avoid a ban;
- use Butterflies mainly to sell or promote services outside the app;
- break the law or try to interfere with or break into the service.
5. Keeping each other's time
Cancelling is fine when you tell people early. Repeatedly cancelling late or not showing up lowers your private reliability score, which affects how often you are introduced to others and can lead to fewer introductions or limits on your account. The score is private and we do not adjust it on request unless it is clearly wrong. Post-meetup check-ins are private, and a no-show report counts only when both people's answers agree.
6. Safety
Reports are reviewed by our team. To review a report, we may read the conversation between the people involved. If someone is reported by several different people, we may pause their new introductions while we look into it.
We are not able to check every person or control what happens when people meet. Do not rely on an ID check or an introduction as a guarantee of anyone's character or intentions. Please meet first in a public place, tell a friend where you are going, arrange your own transport, and leave if you feel uncomfortable. Use the block and report tools in chat. In an emergency, contact local emergency services.
7. Your content
You keep ownership of what you post. You give us a limited license to store, display and process it to run Butterflies for you, for example to show your photo and name to your matches. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies other people already received in chat. We may also use your content to keep Butterflies safe (for example, reviewing a report) and, in aggregated form that does not identify you, to improve how matching works.
8. Copyright complaints
Please upload only photos and text you have the right to use. If you believe something on Butterflies infringes your copyright, email support@getbutterflies.app with your contact details, a description of the work and where it appears, and a statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not allowed. We will review it and may remove the content and, for repeat infringers, close the account.
9. Ending your account
You can stop using Butterflies and delete your account at any time, using Delete my account in My profile or by emailing the privacy address below. We may suspend or remove accounts that break these Terms, put people at risk, or have inaccurate information, and we may do so without notice when safety requires it. After an account ends, we may keep limited information as described in the Privacy Policy.
10. Disclaimers
Butterflies is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we do not promise that the service will be uninterrupted or error free, that you will find a friend or partner, or that other members are truthful or safe. We are not responsible for what members say or do, online or in person.
11. Limits on our liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Butterflies, Land of Lincoln LLC and the people who run it are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for losses arising from your dealings with other members. Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the past 12 months or one hundred US dollars. Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not fully apply to you, and nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
12. Your responsibility
You agree to defend and reimburse Butterflies and Land of Lincoln LLC, and the people who work for them, for claims, losses and reasonable legal costs that come from content you post, your breach of these Terms, or your violation of someone's rights or the law. We will tell you promptly about any claim and let you help with it, and this does not apply to the extent the law does not allow it.
13. Disputes and governing law
Please contact us first and we will try to resolve any problem informally. If we cannot, these Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and disputes will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Illinois, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim somewhere else.
14. Changes
We may update these Terms. If a change is meaningful we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Butterflies after that means you accept the new Terms.
